We're Still Here!

We battled through the winter and even got a snow day (first in five years). Chad has been taking one class on the books and the other off. He's extending his schooling into the Fall. We here another year which will leave time for more adventures. Here's the latest and greatest~

GO METS! HELLO CITI FIELD!
The apple made it into the new stadium. On April 29th 80 fifth graders and Sarah will see it. Take me out to the ball game!

Real World Brooklyn-Record Set Straight
People do not drive around Brooklyn. People take buses and subways except if they live in Redhook. The Redhook neighborhood housed the latest Real World folks at Pier 41. The location is interesting because not a whole lot exist.
Pier 41 also houses the BEST Key Lime tarts and pies in the world. Steve only sells Key Lime. We're fans of the Swingle (Chocolate covered Key Lime tart).

Up Town Field Trip
We headed up north with our crew! Goodness it felt like another world. We went to The Cloisters which is a French Monastery, to Tom's Restaurant for some Seinfeld fun and St. John the Divine. Elin took us through Columbia campus where she works.

Saint John the Divine is the largest cathedral in the world. The statue of liberty can stand in the middle. Huge!

Tom's Restaurant is famous for Seinfeld, the best milkshake in NYC and Suzanne Vega sang about "Tom's Diner".

A Slice of Home in NYC!

Bubble hockey has been found in the East Village. We headed out to eat at Supper (very yummy Italian)and watch some hoops! We found this bar that houses bubble hockey. It's not like the olden days of USSR vs. USA but the colors resembled Red Wings vs. Maple Leafs. Quarters were placed and locals were played.

Theater Fun

Brooklyn Academy of Music featured Ethan Hawk in Cherry Orchard and Winters Tale. Both were incredible. Ethan grabbed a guitar in a Winter's Tale sang with an incredible voice. He stole the show!

Detroit Visitor!

Sarah's sister came to visit! It was Fashion Week~ Bryant Park Tents were up. Sneaking in is really difficult.

We spent our Christmas and New Year in D-Town with family and friends. December was Chad's marathon finish-line with classes ending, teaching finishing on a strong note and a week of vacation! Much needed rest for us both. I've been working weekends to test-prep the kiddos for a huge reading exam. Some mid-west relaxation was a huge need.

Snow finally fell in December! The cold winds are really beginning to kick-up. Our walks through the Prospect Park are a little shorter these days. Looks like Seattle has kept all our snow! Enjoy!

Mom and dad Robb came to visit for Thanksgiving. We had a wonderful time visiting Brighton Beach, Coney Island, shopping at Macys! The best was Dave Brubeck at the Blue Note! An incredible night~

Our latest adventure in theater was American Buffalo starring John Leguizamo, Cedric the Entertainer and Haley Joel Osment. It had mixed reviews. We enjoyed it!

Natural History Museum...Prospect Park...and a delicious bagel (from La Bagel Delight) with cream cheese, onion, and tomato...

They even figured out we could the Statue of Liberty from our kitchen window! (it's small, but it's there!)

Broadway or Bust!

Some people run the New York Marathon...we're walking Broadway. All of it! 13.3 miles! Saturday we took on the tourist section. Our trail head started at Wall Street. Well the stock exchanged hasn't turned around. RIP. At Bleecher we had to break away from the crowd. 1.5 miles! Yay! As we turned down Bleecher Chad spotted Salman Rushdie heading to a Barack Obama rally for writers.

Come to New York! If you can't... it's going on a national tour starting August 2009. This is an amazing production! It's 3 1/2 hours long but felt like one! When it ended, we wanted more. It's a dark comedy that will make you laugh, cry and shout just like the characters.

This weekend marks the end! The Mets final regular season game is Sunday! A report just came out that the old home run apple will NOT follow the Mets to Citi Stadium. In fact, a new apple will be made but the hat will placed in the new stadium. Tears. As one blogger on ESPN stated,"We loved her to the core!"

The Bensons came out in August for a Red Sox game. Monument Park was packed but we managed to sneak in! The Yankees lost but we got to see the old ballpark one last time.

September is here! Where did summer go! Chad had his first day of teaching on Tuesday. The kiddos at NYU are eager youngsters. I started at PS 11 in Chelsea. A world of difference from Bed-Stuy! Student run farmer's market, music class that includes guitar lessons and a science lab. Here are some August highlights:
Chad and some folks went to Levon Helm's house for the famous ramble. Levon's house is a wooden mountain man's dream castle. They also took a side trip to see Big Pink.
While at ramble I was in Egypt seeing every temple in the country. Amazing. I'll spar you the 560 pictures.

Medieval Night at Keyspan Park! Sword fights, knights and everything that the Medieval Times entertainment center in New Jersey could offer the Cyclone fans.

Pat Venditte,the Staten Island Yankees star pitcher did not play. We were disappointed because he wears a special glove so that he can pitch using the right or left. However, King Henry (the Cyclones host) brought all kinds of excitement as usual. Miss New York made a visit and the Beach Bums (summer Cyclone Interns)lead the crowd in cheers.

So we head out to see a Cyclones baseball! Excited to eat peanuts, drink a beverage and have a hot dog at the old ballpark! However, we were faced with sticker shock! No, not by the price but calorie count. On every item! I won't share with you how much a bag of peanuts will pack on the pounds. It's not pretty. We rented a house in the mountains with our friends! We went on a hike through the woods to find the lost city of Wellington! Enjoyed putting together the world's most difficult jigsaw puzzle, Boggle battles, Apples to Apples and spending lots of time with people we miss!!

95 degrees did not stop us from heading out to see music. Epstein and his friend from D.C. drove up for the Coney Island Siren Music Festival. Broken Social Scene performed with 100% energy! Even with a drummer recovering from heat-stroke.

We headed down to Prospect Park for the summer New York Philharmonic concert. The sky was incredible and the weather was actually cool. Fireworks ended the evening. The encore was chosen by the audience via texting! So high-tech!

Where else can you play dodge ball, relive your childhood cruising down a slip-n-slide and listen to live bands! McCarren Pool the greatest venue ever. Basically, it's a old pool that's filled with concert goers instead of water. Chad and I went for the Breeders but fell in love with Kim and Matt (a high energy Brooklyn band).

The Yankees aren't the only ones getting a new stadium. The Mets are also gearing for a new ball field. The new structure lingers over the old one...it's kind of sad. The Mets beat San Fran! After our Chinatown bus trip to D.C. I figured I'd try a new bus company. The Bolt Bus promises internet and comfy seats. All was true at an incredible price of $35.00 round trip. Four hours on this bus was easy breezy. So off to Boston to meet Diane and Kristi from Detroit. We had a rockn' good time in Beantown. Took in a Salem witch trail day. Even caught a Red Sox's game at Fenway!!

Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest was filled with drama this year. Chestnut beat Koybayashi in overtime. Both men consumed 59 dogs and buns in ten minutes. The decision maker would be; the first to eat five dogs and buns. Chestnut won! This was the first time an OT occurred in the event's 93 years.

Our baseball crew (Ethan and Elin from Seattle) joined us in Coney Island for a real baseball experience. Brooklyn's minor league team played the Ironbirds from Aberdeen on Saturday. Of course we rode the Wonder Wheel. It's maybe not the world's oldest but the swinging cars that only hang by rusted wheels that roll makes it the scariest ferris wheel. Thank goodness they post a sign ensuring the visitors that they've gone 85 years without an accident.

Newark, New Jersey we decided was an interesting town. We'll go back for more ManChild but not for sightseeing.

Don't Be Strange on the Train- Part 2

Every morning I wake-up at 6:40 to make it by 7:13 to catch the F train to the G to the A. Three trains to work. However, my commute has been a little more interesting. A movie is being film at my Hoyt-Schermerhorn G train stop. It's called "The Taking Of Pelham 1-2-3". A thriller/adventure movie about a subway train hijacking. I haven't seen anyone yet. More than likely won't. But it's interesting to see all the stuff and craziness that goes into one scene of a movie. Lots of big names John Travolta, Denzel Washington and maybe our Brooklyn boy John Turturro.

Di and Jen stopped into town for a Chelsea Hotel experience. Truly living like rock stars! What an amazing place! Each room is different. Art everywhere. The history alone gives you goose-bumps. We found out that part of the building is apartments and the other part is the hotel. Incredible place and worth a stay.

Spring has been packed full of playing! Here's the latest and greatest!
Feeling brave along with our fellow Seattle transplant friends Ethan and Elin, we supported our Mariners in the Bronx. Oh, our Mariners were hurting on the field. Yankee fans were handing us tissue.

We had friends fly in from Detroit and L.A. Chad's friend Kevin had an amazing documentary premiere in the Tribeca Film Festival. Check out "Playing for Change".

D.C. bound for a Drive By Truckers show. We experienced "the Chinatown bus". Basically, there's several bus companies that will take you from one Chinatown to another (Boston, D.C., Philly). Here's the secret on the cheap tickets. They load the cargo storage with produce. Seriously, at 7a.m. our bus became a traveling fruit stand. Safely arriving in D.C. our friend Epstein showed us the sights. The DBT show...awesome.

A movie crew took over Park Slope for a day. A film called "Julie and Julia" caused a buzzzz with neighbors looking for famous folks hanging out in the Slope. I saw no one. The stars of the film are Meryl Streep and Amy Adams.

April was not the final ballroom dancing performance!The team won the first district dance-off. They received a gold. With matching dresses and suits our crew got on the subway...just like the movie. Except our teachers were yelling "don't be strange on the train". Hopefully NYC MTA will market that phrase.

April Fool! Hahaha. You knew that was coming. The latest and greatest. Brooklyn has been warm. The garbage is beginning to smell! Welcome Spring! PS 93 just finished their ballroom dancing session. Lets just say Mad Hot Ballroom will be not knocking on our doors if they are making another movie. But the kids were cute in their suits and dresses for the final performance.

Wedding plans are moving along. We have a date. July 11,2009 in downtown DETROIT! Our ceremony and reception will be at Masonic Temple which is a historical building in the dirty-d. It's a really wild place with tons of rooms, chambers and creepy hallways. Plus roller derby! An experience it will be!

Two Month Update!

Goodness time has past very quickly! Chad has flown to Seattle three times. I've traveled to Detroit and Seattle. Chad's classes are going really well. PS 93 is keeping me busy. Overall, the NYC winter months have been mild to allow for tons of play. We've been exploring this crazy place.

Here's an update
People Sightings:
-Kate Walsh from Grey's at the play "Homecoming" where Ian Mcshane (Deadwood) and Michael Mclean (Best in Show etc.)were the leads.

Things we've heard:
-Carnegie Hall triple encore for this symphony from Amsterdam. The gray hairs were going nuts...a near stage rush! Bravo! Chad and I couldn't hang with the 70 and over crowd after the second encore.
-George Saunders spoke about his writing. He admitted to writing most of his first novel at this really boring job.

Things we've seen:
-MoMa
-"Macbeth" with Patrick Swewart from Star Trek
-"Happy Days" one woman Samuel Beckett play in which the woman was buried in dirt for the entire show.
-"Homecoming" with Ian Mcshane...he is one mean man.

Things that were NYC interesting:
-I saw no large amounts of snow this winter.
-We "went live" with our food at a vegetarian restaurant. Basically nothing was cooked. It was a raw food experience.
-The Citi card commercial shot in the Fall is on T.V. When you see the cute couple order "elf" food at the fancy restaurant then run into a deli to grab real food. Well the deli is our little grocery. So much hype that night for a two second shot.
-VOTING IN NYC IS SO OLD SCHOOL! Check out our voting booth. I had to ask how to use it and in a typical Brooklyn way the guy made fun me.

We're Engaged

It was a Friday evening after a long day of work. A quick short walk through Prospect Park turned into our engagement. He proposed in the woods, overlooking the park. With great surprise a creepy guy came out of the woods. No mugging occurred. The rest of our weekend was spent near Woodstock, NY. Fantastic! Pictures to come. Can't wait to celebrate!

All of Brooklyn was a rockn'! I couldn't sleep a wink. The Bar down below was jumpn' until five in the morn! My mom came in late saying the Grand Army fireworks located right by our house were great. No Time Square for her and Chad just a quiet night with some friends.

As we end our first semester let us reflect on our ONLY in New York moments!

-Reading The Post on the subway as a story for The Post is in the making.

-Realizing that, in an emergency, the most helpful neighbors would be those located in the local (downstairs) bar.

-On one subway trip we would experience the following: a fantastic guitar player, a ten minute sermon on "Crack to Christ". Switch trains. See the world's saddest clown lost trying to climb the stairs with extra long shoes (had to go kind of sideways). Get on the train. A father explaining to his five year old son what every subway line means in NYC. Then see our guitar player again.

-Best kept NYC secret... Halloween is bigger than New Years!

-When walking down the street hear a kid yell from his apartment the Yankees score to his friend across the street.

-Met a guy named Chris the Butcher. Asked him for some fish.

-Stairs would become my worst enemy yet I can't avoid them.

-See a world premiere avant garde opera by guy who wrote music for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and experience an uncomfortable audience response as people leave in throngs, clap with great disappointment yet the composer keeps coming out for an encore. Expect to hear goatee-sporting guy and his intellectual-looking date next to us to rant and rave about how great it was but instead hear them whisper, "Well that sure sucked."

-See a world premiere short film with hoola-hooping dancers about an expressway with a full orchestra rockn' out in sequence to the movie and dancers. Amazing!

-Honk your horn receive a $250.00 ticket. Oh, wait...there's another honking driver outside my window!

-We've screamed like an eight year olds because:
The Arcade Fire show on Randall's Island was a jump around good time with city lights as their background.

Russian Extraveganza!

What a day! Chad and I had an amazing experience that took place in our own backyard! That's what we love about NYC. A friend from NYU treated a group of us to a day of Russian culture. His family moved to NYC from Russia when he was nine. Our day started by going to a bath house. There were several different sauna rooms and a cold pool. The idea is that you sweat-it-out in a sauna then jump in the cold pool. Wakes you up! People also had Oak branches that were soaked in water that would then be used to hit people with. Interesting scene.

Then we headed toward Brighten Beach (located in Brooklyn) for dinner. Little did we know that dinner would be a Russian style Las Vegas show with techno-music pumpn' out Russian tunes! Lots of vodka. Excellent food!

Our restaurant was located down a residential street. An man dressed in a military uniform checked out our dress before entering.

Latin-Russian techno! Packed dance floor!

Smoke machines, water walls and a cross-dressing MC turned the little restaurant into a ragen' scene.

Every neighborhood is decorated! All the trees are a glow! P.S. 93 is gearing-up for their holiday show! BUT TEARS no snow!
SUNDAY we woke to an old familiar sound of our youth! Someone scraping the sidewalk to get every snowflake off! People were fired-up about the snow! In Prospect Park the kids were trying their hardest to sled. Still a little brown in some areas!

Chad's family came to visit! We had an incredible time! Thanksgiving day was steamy warm. Perfect weather for the Macy's Parade. Perched in Central Park, we screamed liked the kiddles surrounding us as the Sesame Street characters rolled by (even Oscar was happy). Ronald McDonald scared the crowd and Snoopy walked on spectators' heads. Amazing. No turkey was served, but halibut with capers, tomatoes and olives filled the tummies of all. By the end we were the stuffed turkeys.

Happy Pumpkin Day! Hope this finds you with Snickers stuffed in your pockets and some witches brew served up. NYC in the Fall is amazing. Throw in some carved pumpkins and kiddles in costumes it's a postcard! Chad and I went to a party on Saturday. Chad amazed the crowd as Helvetica (a font...don't get me started). I dressed as a pillow fight. Super fun! On Sunday we carved pumpkins in SoHo. Then had to carry them on the subway! Today PS 93 was quiet. No pumpkin fun in NYC DOE. Tonight we are heading to Carnegie Hall!

Lights, Camera, No Action

On Wednesday, I walked out of the F train subway stop and strolled down one block to our apartment. As I approached our corner I saw all these bright pink signs saying "no parking". Oh tears, poor Park Slopians will have a difficult parking evening! Well, with further reading I found out a Citicard commercial was being filmed on our street. Cool! However, after even more reading the production notes instructed us that "black-out materials" were available at the mobile home because they were shooting from 9pm-8am (bitterly disappointed to learn this did not mean "cases of beer" -cab). Yikes! So last night I was prepared to head out and get my "black-out" material (so was I -cab). Well, 9pm, 10pm...many snores later no excitement. At 3am I woke up but no noise. Hmmmmm. 6:40am I headed out to work and there were tons of people but no action. All Hype! No Action!

Our home is in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Now, where is that you ask! Right next to lovely Prospect Park. We like to call it the "Little Sea". It is a mini-Seattle with NYC flare. Lots of organics and earth-friendly folk.

He's working for M-Metrics! While workn' he's writing like a mad man. Class is on Monday and Tuesday night. One is an interesting writing workshop! The other a Yeats all Irish, all the time class.

Sarah's Business
She's working for P.S. 93 NYC DOE! In Bed Stuy, Brooklyn 18 fifth graders with full personalities fill the basically equip Rm. 414. However, a new computer has arrived and maybe an overhead will be excavated from the basement. Working hard, so that she can play hard!
